If you are Muslim, discuss wasiat and faraid with a qualified adviser before deciding how to leave assets. If you are not Muslim, ask about a will and an executor to carry out your wishes.

If someone has passed away in Malaysia
Step 01
Gather the family records
Find the death certificate, will or wasiat, marriage and birth records, and details of the heirs.
Step 02
List assets and debts
Include land titles, bank accounts, EPF, insurance and loans. Note which assets are in Sabah, Sarawak or another country.
Step 03
Confirm where to apply
Ask Amanah Raya, JKPTG or a lawyer which application fits the estate. Muslim families may also need Syariah advice on inheritance shares.
Step 04
Transfer the assets
Use the approved estate documents with banks and land offices. Pay debts and record what each heir receives.
Malaysia questions
It depends on value, asset type, whether there is a will and the deceased's religion. Amanah Raya, JKPTG, the Civil High Court and the Syariah Court can each have a role.
